Schulz: “We cannot and should not outsource our problems to Turkey”

Talks with Turkey on dealing with the refugee crisis should not be linked to the country’s efforts to join the EU, warned Martin Schulz. The EP President addressed European heads of state and government at the start of the EU summit on 17-18 March dedicated to the migration crisis and economic priorities. “Turkey won’t get any discounts on media freedom and minority protection, the separation of powers or the rule of law,” he said, calling them “non-negotiable issues”.

 Brussels, 9 March 2016   European Commission  - SPEECH/16/701

Speech of Vice-President Dombrovskis at the EP plenary on the EU-Turkey summit and the European Semester

Honourable Mr President, Honourable Madame Minister, Honourable Members,
Today I am speaking on behalf of President Juncker, so allow me to underline a message that he has conveyed many times to this House: ours is a political Commission that delivers a political response to the major challenges of our time.

Nowhere is this more true than in our vision for the European economy. Just as the euro represents a political project that requires political governance and democratic accountability, so our economic strategy demands a political debate at all levels, European and national.

In many parts of Europe, for instance, sovereign and private sector balance sheets remain highly leveraged and banks’ non-performing loans high. In the US, aging-related spending pressures and unfulfilled infrastructure needs diminish economic prospects. And in Japan, deflation is putting the recovery at risk...David Lipton...IMF

Policy Imperatives for Boosting Global Growth and ProsperityBy David Lipton  First Deputy Managing Director, IMF  National Association for Business Economics

Washington, D.C.  March 8, 2016

Let me start by thanking the National Association for Business Economics and Tom Beers for inviting me to speak to you today.

At the recent G20 meeting in Shanghai, countries recognized the challenges facing the world economy, acknowledged that the recovery remains too weak and uneven, and recognized the downside risks. The meeting’s message provided some reassurance that countries stand ready to act if necessary. Today I want to make the case for action now.

The EU economy is continuing its recovery and many Member States are making progress to address structural problems of their economies...President Valdis Dombrovskis

European Semester 2016: fewer Member States have economic imbalances than a year ago

EU Member States are making progress in addressing imbalances in their economies.

They have also advanced in carrying out the country-specific recommendations issued last year, although to varying degrees across countries and policy areas. These efforts are key in strengthening the European recovery and fostering convergence. They also reflect the focus of this year's European Semester: re-launching investment, implementing structural reforms and pursuing responsible fiscal policies.

The Commission decided last November that 18 Member States merited in-depth reviews to assess whether they were experiencing macroeconomic imbalances, and if so, how serious these imbalances were.
