European Commission - Upcoming events
Monday 9 May: Europe Day
The news:
On Monday 9 May, Europe Day will be celebrated across the EU. For the Commission's part, President Juncker and the College Members will participate in events at national and European level to mark the annual celebration, including Open Doors Days in EU Representations and other activities in the Member States, citizens’ dialogues, debates and conferences, and different cultural events.
The background:
Europe Day marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration, presented by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950. It proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), whose members would pool coal and steel production.
The ECSC, with its founding members, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, was the first in a series of European institutions that would ultimately become today's European Union.
