MAY 19, 2016 Press Release
Energy prices down 8.9 percent over the year ended April 2016
The Consumer Price Index for energy declined 8.9 percent over the year ended in April, driven by a 13.8-percent decrease in gasoline prices. Prices for natural gas (-6.5 percent) and electricity (-2.1 percent) also contributed to the decline.
Prices for other motor fuels, fuel oil, and propane, kerosene, and firewood were also down for the year, but together only make up 3.2 percent of the broader energy index.
Energy prices decreased over the year despite rising 3.4 percent in April and 0.9 percent in March (seasonally adjusted). Most of the rise in April was due to an 8.1-percent increase in gasoline prices.
