Press Release - EU Energy Council discussed security of gas supply
The EU Energy Council held in Luxembourg on 6 June has debated the European Commission’s proposed new rules on the security of gas supplies.
EU energy ministers agreed to a Council position on the Commission’s proposal on Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) that will serve as a basis to enter into negotiations with the European Parliament.
IGAs are made when an individual EU country strikes an energy supply-related deal with a non-EU country.
Ministers also discussed key aspects – regional cooperation, solidarity and transparency - of the Security of Gas Supply proposal, published in February 2016, aiming to prevent a gas supply crisis and ensure better emergency plans if a crisis were to happen.
Topics on the Council agenda also included electricity market design, and the Commission’s strategies forLiquefied Natural Gas and gas storage, and heating and cooling.
In the margins of the Council meeting, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden and Norway signed a political declaration on energy cooperation in the Northern Seas.
